A five year old falls into a pit. What would you do?"Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war"? People who have been raised outside lunatic asylums would want otherwise. But not our efficient news networks. Hundreds of Indians fall into pits and potholes so thoughtfully maintained by our municipal corporations,to trap unsuspecting citizens and entertain themselves. So,what compelled these networks to project this event on the scale of a national calamity. Maybe the kid's name misled everyone.Perhaps they really thought he was a prince and felt the king would be miffed if his boy lost his best opportunity to be on tv.And what would you say of the Haryana government's reaction? Perhaps the minister felt like cashing in and projecting himself as a philanthrophist with minimum damage to his wallet. Rs 200,000 for falling into a pit? We'll soon have more pits than people. The municipalty will have a field day, taking bribes for digging pits and heftier bribes for covering them up. Nobody thought it appropriate to install CCTV cameras in our railway stations but they felt a need to use one to observe this boy.Now I know exactly how Brian Glanville felt, when he asked in his column after Steve McClaren was appointed Sven Goran Eriksson's successor, "Would you rather be shot or hanged?".
